Shouldn’t this guy have migrated by end of October?

He’s been working in my backyard area doing it for me for the past four days I’m worried he’s Byam self and doesn’t know how to migrate to warmer climates if I am correct in their identification. I live in Oak Grove Minnesota have never seen the species of bird in our area before today interesting!

The Short-Billed Dowitcher stopped foraging for food long enough to spend a few minutes preening itself.   Short-billed Dowitcher

It walked in the marsh wetland one way then would turn around and walk the same path in the opposite direction foraging for food.

About

This juvenile constitutes the third record for Britain and the first for the Isles of Scilly (and the 65th species of wader for the archipelago). It was an excellent find for local birder, Will Wagstaff.

Separation from juv Long-billed Dowither is relatively straight forward given views like this! Features of note include the internal markings in the tertials and inner greater coverts (the so-called tiger striping), short primary projection, dark cap (paler and greyer in LBDO) and relatively bright plumage aspect (again greyer & relatively more uniform in LBDO).

Interestingly though, this bird is quite dull with just a hint of buff on the breast and this would suggest a bird of the nominate form, griseus, which breeds in Quebec and Newfoundland. And thus, perhaps, the form most likely to be expected in a vagrant context.

More footage of the juvenile SBDO: I just couldn't resist going back for more views!

Some birders are finding it difficult to locate, but (apart from its first day) it has always frequented the same part of the beach adjacent to skirt Island at the following grid ref: 49.94425 -6.32002
