Overview

Susie Island is closed to the public. The island is best viewed from a boat, or from an overlook in Grand Portage State Park. Permission must be obtained from the Grand Portage Reservation. The nearest public water access is in Grand Portage at the end of Marina Road.

History

In 1971 The Nature Conservancy (TNC) purchased the southern portion of Susie Island. Sometimes called Big Susie Island, it is the largest of the thirteen islands that make up the Susie Islands. In the 1980s TNC made several other purchases, eventually acquiring all of Susie Island. In 2016 TNC began the process of transferring the island to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The transfer was completed in 2017.
