Weed Status

Norway maple is listed as an invasive terrestrial plant by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Specially Regulated Plant

In 2020, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture added Norway maple to the Specially Regulated Plant list.

Sellers shall affix a label directly to the plant or container packaging that is being sold that advises buyers to only plant Norway maple and its cultivars in landscapes where the seedlings will be controlled by mowing or other means. Norway maple seed is wind dispersed and trees should be planted at least 100 yards from natural areas.

Norway maple forms dense canopy, reducing native plant diversity in the understory.

Complete maple series here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL30F3DDE2845602EA Norway maple is sometimes confused with sugar or black maples due to the lack of teeth on the margins of the leaves, but it can be easily distinguished from sugar maples by both the seeds and the bark among other things.
