Taxonomy
Red hickory was previously classified as Carya glabra var. odorata, a variety of pignut hickory. More recently, some sources consider it a synonym of Carya glabra. However, most sources now recognize it as a separate species. Some notable exceptions are ITIS37, NCBI34, The Plant List36, and FNA45.
