Red hickory was previously classified as Carya glabra var. odorata, a variety of pignut hickory. More recently, some sources consider it a synonym of Carya glabra. However, most sources now recognize it as a separate species. Some notable exceptions are ITIS, NCBI, The Plant List, and FNA. |
