The stem is covered with white, spreading hairs.

The leaves are alternate.

The flower has four petals arranged asymmetrically toward the top of the flower.

Similar Species

 
 

Longflower beeblossom (Gaura longiflora) stem is covered with appressed, not spreading, hairs. It may occur in Minnesota.

Scarlet beeblossom (Gaura coccinea) has red petals. It is found in the western third of the state.

Prior to 2004 this plant was classified as Gaura biennis. Molecular studies in that year showed that the genus Guara is deeply nested within one of the two major clades of the genus Oenothera. In 2007 and 2013 revisions were made to the new classification of the transferred species.
