Kittentails was formerly classified as Besseya bullii and was placed in the Scrophulariaceae (figwort) family. Morphological and molecular analysis in 2004 resulted in Besseya and closely related genera being moved to the Plantaginaceae (plantain) family, and this plant being reassigned to the Veronica genus. Several sources, including GBIF, ITIS, Flora of North America, and NatureServe, use the name Synthyris bullii. Few sources, including USDA PLANTS and BONAP, continue to use the old name Besseya bullii. Most sources, including GRIN, NCBI, iNaturalist, World Flora Online, and Plants of the World Online, use the name Veronica bullii.
