Description

Canada fire-colored beetle is a common, medium-sized, beetle. It occurs in the United States and southern Canada east of the Great Plains. The larvae are found under loose bark of fallen, moist, rotting logs of deciduous trees. They feed on fungi and fungi-infested wood. Adults are active in late spring and summer. They are found resting on vegetation during the day.

Adults are ¼ to (7.0 to 16.0 mm) in length. The body is soft, elongated, and moderately flattened.

The head is black. It is abruptly narrowed in the rear into a distinct neck. The compound eyes are kidney-shaped and very large. On the male, they nearly touch at the top of the head. On the female, they are smaller and more widely separated at the top of the head. The antennae are long, black, and comb-like. They have 11 segments. On segments 4 through 10 there is a long extension on one side (pectinate). On the male, the extensions are much longer. The mouthparts are directed downwards.

The plate covering the first segment of the thorax (pronotum) is pale reddish-brown, somewhat oval, and narrower than the wing covers (elytra). It does not have flattened edges (not margined).

The elytra are black and long, completely covering the abdomen. They are widest at the rear, and they are distinctly margined.

The legs are long, thin, and pale reddish-brown. On the front and middle legs, the last part of the leg (tarsus) corresponding to the foot, has 5 segments. On the hind legs, the tarsus has just 4 segments. The last segment of each tarsus has a pair of claws at the tip, The claws are not toothed.
