green lacewings

(Tribe Chrysopini)

Overview

Chrysopini is a tribe of typical green lacewings. They occur worldwide on every continent except Antarctica. There are 926 described Chrysopini species in 35 genera worldwide, 50 species in 11 genera in North America north of Mexico, and at least 9 species in 3 genera in Minnesota.

Some species emit an unpleasant odor when handled.

The larvae live on vegetation.

Description

The body is narrow, and on most species it is green. The prothorax is long.

The antennae are about as long as the body but shorter than the wings. Beyond the first few segments at the base, all antennal segments are longer than wide.

On most species, the pterostigma on the forewing is completely pale. On the outer half of the wing, the cross veins connect to the pseudomedial vein at an angle greater than 60°.

Glossary

Pterostigma

The dark, blood-filled second cell at the leading edge of each wing toward the tip on many insects. It is heaver than adjacent, similar sized areas and is thought to dampen wing vibrations and signal mates. (= stigma. More precise than stigma but less often used, even by entomologists.)
