Overview

Cassidina is a very large tribe of very small to small beetles. It contains most of but not all of the species of tortoise beetles. Yhere are more than 1,700 species in 87 genera worldwide, about 30 species in 15 genera in North America north of Mexico, and at least 5 species in 4 genera in Minnesota..

Description

Adults are to ½ (4 to 13 mm) in length.

Golden tortoise beetle larva carrying a shield made of fecal matter, feeding on a leaf of bindweed. Observe its rear end adding a drop of fluid to the shield.

The poop bug metamorphoses into a beautiful little beetle, the tortoise golden beetle.
