| Birds | Several bird species with protected status in Minnesota are found here: Threatened – Wilson’s Phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor) Special concern – Greater Prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa), Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow (Ammodramus nelsoni) Other birds species that breed here include Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps), Black Tern (Chlidonias niger), American Coot (Fulica americana), Sora (Porzana carolina), Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola), American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus), Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis), and Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias). Waterfowl migration peaks between late April and early May. Shorebird and prairie songbird numbers peak from mid- to late-May. |
