Overview

Most of Neal WMA is wet brush prairie. Over half of the site is seasonally flooded. There is mesic prairie on the western third and at the southeast corner.

History

In 2014, The Nature Conservancy transferred 160 acres of its Twin Valley Prairie SNA preserve to the Minnesota DNR. That land became part of Neal WMA.

Management

The western portion of the WMA, from the north parking area to the western boundary and south to County Road 39, is restored and planted tall grass prairie.

Prescribed burns were conducted in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2008, 2013, and 2018. A large wildfire passed through the site in 2011 and another in 2015. Brush removal began in August–September 2018.
